Ranked Top Workplace in Southeast Wisconsin by Employees
During the most turbulent economic stretch in generations, The Journal Sentinel sets out to identify some of the companies and organizations in southeast Wisconsin that consider it an obligation, or at least smart buisiness, to give their employees a fair shake and a fulfilling work experience.
To do this, The Journal Sentinel invited workers to nominate their employers, and enlisted the help of workplace consulting firm WorkplaceDynamics to survey tens of thousands of workers in the region.
The result is a fascinating and diverse list of organizations, large and small, that are finding creative and exciting ways to engage and retain employees.
Mayville Engineering Company, Inc. placed 19th on the Top 100 list. MEC was entered into the Top Midsize Workplaces along with about 60 other companies in the same category.
The Ultimate goal of this process, and this special section, is to highlight some of the best practices that others may want to consider adopting.
Community Improvement Award
The Mayville area Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Mayville presented Mayville Engineering Company a community Improvement Award for the renovation done on the old Maysteel building on Horicon Street to turn it into a beautiful addition to the City. CEO, President and Chairman Bob Kamphuis stated that "We saw it as an opportunity to polish something up. A lot of things had to come together to get this done. Our people are very proud we could accomplish this." The redesign of the exterior was done by Robert Hartmann of Racine who hand drew the artist's rendering of the building in two weeks. The older section of the building was completely gutted during the renovation.

Manufacturer of the Year
In February 1993 and again in February, 1996, MEC was named the Manufacturer of the Year receiving the Grand Award in the large size company category. This competition, co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC) Association, and Virchow, Krause, & Company is held state-wide. An independent panel of judges, including leaders in business, education, and the business press evaluate all nominees. The Grand Award is based on the company's commitment to its employees, overall quality, export activity, and total growth.
Mr. Jim Haney, President of the WMC said, "With all the talk about foreign competition, we tend to overlook the achievements of American manufacturers. Many of the world's most successful companies in their respective industries are right here in Wisconsin." Mayville Engineering Company, Inc was honored to be recognized as one of these firms.
In its announcement, Wisconsin Mandufacturers Commerce Association said "Mayville Engineering Co., Inc. has flourished since its employees became part owners over a decade ago, purchasing 40 percent of the company. Since that time, the company has seen its annual sales grow from $18 million to $116 million, or an increase of 500 percent in 10 years."
