Mayville Engineering Company, Inc. Purchases Cummins Facility in Wautoma, Wisconsin

Mayville Engineering Company, Inc., (MEC) announces the purchase of the former Cummins Filtration facility located on East Division Street in Wautoma, Wisconsin. The facility consists of 156,424 sq. ft., situated on 12.6 acres. The facility was shut down by Cummins in March of 2009.

MEC is moving quickly to reopen this facility and expand its' manufacturing capabilities in Wautoma. Prior to submitting an offer to purchase the facility, MEC held an exploratory job fair to gain knowledge about the workforce in the Wautoma area. The job fair was very successful attracting over 400 applicants in many of the skilled trades that MEC will be pursuing including Welders, Brake Press Operators, CNC Machinists, Electromechanical, Assembly, Maintenance Electricians and Quality Techs.

"We were extremely happy with the number of experienced, skilled tradespeople in the area who are looking to join our Team", commented Bob Kamphuis, Chairman, President & CEO of MEC. "We researched several locations in which to expand our manufacturing footprint and selected Wautoma, not only because of the available facility, but much more importantly, because of the availability of high quality skilled and motivated people. This was a key factor in our decision to expand to this area. Because we are an Employee-Owned company (ESOP), we are not just hiring employees…we are hiring future Shareholders". MEC plans to initially hire around 100 employee Shareholders by the end of 2011 and expects to more than double that number within the next three years.

The purchase of this facility will allow MEC's contract division to continue to grow sales for the next few years without constraint. "MEC's Contract customers continue to express their desire to consolidate product needs and grow their business with us. Our customers know they can count on MEC for highly complex fabrications, weldments and stampings, coated with state of the art electro-deposition e-coat, wet or powder coating finishes and built into finished sub-assemblies or top level assemblies. They also know that these will be delivered just when they need it and built to the high quality standards they expect for their customers," cited Tom Verbos, Vice President and General Manager of MEC's Contract and Prototype business units.

Economic incentives were also key in the expansion decision. "We were pleased with the incentives offered to us by the City of Wautoma, the Tri-County Regional Economic Development Corp., the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and Alliant Energy’s Economic Development Incentive.", added Kamphuis. "Growing our business and creating jobs is a benefit to many. Everybody wins."

Interim Mayor Helena Waala stated, "Creating 200 family supporting jobs in Wautoma will have a tremendous impact on our local economy. Wautoma put together a financial package that not only enticed MEC to locate here but encourages further growth," she added.

MEC plans to start production in the new facility during the first quarter of 2011. They are currently working on upgrading and improving the facility to make it ready for industrial equipment installation. A phased-in production approach is being planned starting with manual welding and progressing to robotic welding, brake forming, laser cutting and machining.

MEC, headquartered in Mayville, Wisconsin, currently has six other facilities located in Mayville, Beaver Dam, Berlin and Neillsville, Wisconsin.

Established in 1945, Mayville Engineering Company, Inc. is employee owned. MEC’s Contract Manufacturing and Prototype Divisions offer custom mechanical components, weldments, and assemblies. I beleive that this will be a great addition not only to MEC but also the the community of Wautoma and the surrounding communities as well. This is great news. I myself will be looking forward not only to seeing MEC in our area but hopefully for employment. I was hard to see Cummins leave this area for myself and all communities.
